This writer watched the movie from the ROKU menu at home. It popped up one night I was clicking around. A single Mary J. Blige track is on my IPhone 8. I love that track because it is so funky. Its been there for years and long before her documentary was made. i remember reading a Mary J Blige quote many years ago when she said “I used to sing off key a lot and didn’t know it.” She is an honest person and this film work is all about her rawest truths. She went from being known in the projects to being a world superstar before she was 25. Her singing affects people the way it does. And she sings a lot about pain. In the movie she explains why completely. A Mary J fan is a fan for life. She has them for forty years. They’ll love this film. I don’t keep up with Mary J’s record releases. I have seen her many times because she has worked on stage with Jay Z and Sean Combs, her first real industry agent who also produced this documentary. Puffy knows music and he was floored by her ability when he met her. His hunch turned out to be right. She was good. In the movie, he said ” I just knew that swagger, that voice and her attitude would be a hit with the ladies,” before she reached the top. I recommend the movie. The music is really great and Mary J Blige is a good person with talent and a big heart.
